Privacy Policy

Last updated 29 June 2026 · This page is in English.

Knyaw is a free, non-commercial project to help people learn to read Sgaw Karen. We collect as little about you as we can. The whole app works with no account and no personal data, and we never use tracking cookies, show ads, or sell anything about you.

What we collect (almost nothing)

Nothing is needed to learn. Lesson one and most of the app run with no account. Your lesson progress, settings, and choices are saved only in your own browser (local storage on your device) and are not sent to us unless you sign in.

We only collect personal data in these optional cases:

  • Your email, if you join the updates list or make an account. We use it to send you occasional updates, or a one-tap link to log in.
  • An account and progress, if you sign in (by email link or with Google). We save your email and your learning progress so it follows you across devices.
  • Donations, if you choose to give. Payment is handled entirely by Stripe. We never see or store your card details.
  • Help checking words, if you contribute on the verify page. The name and place you choose to type in are saved with your notes.
  • Anonymous usage counts. We count page views and lesson milestones with no cookies. We turn your IP address and browser into a one-way code that changes every day, so we can roughly count visitors without storing your IP or following you across days.

Cookies

We do not use tracking or advertising cookies, so there is no cookie banner to click through. If you sign in, a necessary login token keeps you signed in. Our usage counting is cookieless.

Who else handles your data

We use a few trusted services to run Knyaw. They only process your data to provide their part of the service:

  • Supabase — stores the database and sends login links.
  • Stripe — processes donations.
  • Vercel — hosts the site and provides cookieless visit and speed measurements.
  • Google — only if you choose to sign in with Google.

We also have a public Facebook page, run by Meta. If you visit or message it, Meta's own privacy policy applies there.

Children

Knyaw is made for everyone, including children learning their heritage language. We collect as little as possible, show no ads, and never sell data. A child can use the app with no account, in which case we hold no personal data about them at all.

Your rights

If you are in the EU or UK, you have the right to see, correct, download, or delete the personal data we hold about you, and to withdraw consent at any time. We will never sell your data.

Where we need a legal basis: we rely on your consent for the updates list, on providing the service for accounts and donations, and on our legitimate interest in keeping the app working for the anonymous usage counts.

Keeping and deleting data

We keep your email until you ask us to remove it or you unsubscribe. Account data stays while your account exists. Anonymous usage counts are kept in aggregate. To delete your account or have your email removed, just ask us (see below).

Changes

If we change how we handle data, we will update this page and the date at the top.
